Ghostwriter FAQ

Does the ghostwriter get any credit?

You own all rights to your ghostwritten book. The ghostwriter does not participate in any royalties or other income.

How long does it take to ghostwrite a book?

Time varies, depending on the interview and research process and length of book. Most books are completed in three to six months.

How much does it cost to ghostwrite a book?

This is perhaps the most common question and one for which the answer is, "It depends." It's simply not possible to set a generic price for ghostwriting a book. There are just too many variables. Those contacting a ghostwriter bring their ideas and project at very different stages of development. That said, a short book could cost as little as $6,000, while a book of 200 pages can cost $25,000. Just email us with a description of your book and we can, in most cases, respond with a price range.

What does the ghostwriter do for his fee?

The fee to ghostwrite your book covers the interviews with you as well as research, writing, editing, and rewriting. The ghostwriter's fee does not include travel or lodging, although travel time is part of the package.

How are fees paid to the ghostwriter?

In most cases the fee is paid in thirds, one-third to start, a third when half the book is written, the balance on completion. With shorter books the fee is typically split into two equal payments, one to start, one when finished.

Will the ghostwriter work on a contingency?

Ghostwriters do this work for the guaranteed income. Most of them write their own books, factoring in the time they must spend with no income and the risk associated with not knowing how much they'll get for their work. Working as a ghostwriter provides them with a more stable income. This is why ghostwriters do not work on contingency.

What else does the ghostwriter do?

The ghostwriter will explain the process for obtaining an agent and/or publisher, as well as the wide-range of publishing options available today. In some cases he will even make referrals. He wants to see your book published and will assist you in the process, in most cases, long after the book is finished and the final fee paid.
