Glossary of Common Writing Terms

Ghostwriter: One who writes with and for someone else without attribution.

Fiction: A book not based on fact, as in a novel.

Non-fiction: A factual book as in a memoir or a business book.

Copyright: The exclusive rights to the production, publication, or sale of the rights to a literary, dramatic, musical, or artistic work. Such rights exist when the work is created but are typically filed with the U.S. Library of Congress. In works written by a ghostwriter, the copyright is held by the credited author.

Non-disclosure: A document obligating the signatory (the ghostwriter in most cases) to not divulge the contents of conversations, documents, records, or other communications to any third party or to reveal his or her participation.

Literary agent: An agent representing writers who attempt to sell their manuscripts to publishers for a percentage of the deal.

Query letter: A letter sent by an author or ghostwriter to various literary agents or publishers seeking permission to submit a complete manuscript for consideration.

Best-selling author: A writer whose book has reached a recognized higher level of sales. The status is generally determined by regional and national newspapers and magazines, most recently by sales figures on Amazon.com.

Book proposal: A form of business plan for a proposed book. These are written by the author or ghostwriter to be submitted to literary agents and publishers. It includes a synopsis of the work, relevant marketing information, as well as the biography of the credited author.
