Working with a Ghostwriter

It is likely that you will never meet personally with your ghostwriter. In most situations you will be in contact by email, telephone, even traditional mail. While contemporary means of communication are what make working with your ghostwriter at a distance possible, it does create certain issues that do not exist when such work was performed face-to-face. It isn't inferior, it is just different, and more cost effective.

Communicate with Your Ghostwriter

Conveying to your ghostwriter your thoughts, ideas and the research material the ghostwriter will need is essential to the process. Even before the writing begins you will have had at least one, and more likely several, long telephone conversations. In these you will have told the ghostwriter what it is you want to accomplish with your book. The ghostwriter, in exchange, will have explained the method for working together to you.

During the process be certain to answer queries promptly. The reality is that most delays in the ghostwriting of a book are created by you, and not the ghostwriter. You have a busy life and that is one of the reasons why you have turned to a ghostwriter, but it is essential that you make the personal commitment of time that is vital to success.

It is likely you will have many telephone conversations with your ghostwriter. Typically, once you've received a draft of chapters and had the time to review it you will convey your thoughts and changes by telephone. It will not be necessary for you to do any writing or editing yourself. That's what the ghostwriter is for.

Give Your Ghostwriter All of the Material

You will likely already have a book which can serve as a model for your ghostwriter to follow. Send it along at once. You should, as well, provide all of your notes, any writing you've done, ANY material that applies to your book. It is better for your ghostwriter to have too much, rather than to little information. Nothing is more limiting to the process than asking your ghostwriter to drag every detail from you. Long answers are far more desirable than short ones. Your ghostwriter is the one person who really wants to hear about your book, in detail.

It may well be that research is still necessary for your book. Let your ghostwriter know the areas that have yet to be explored because they will form important portions of your book. Your ghostwriter is skilled at research and only needs your direction.

Rely on Your Ghostwriter

It's hard, we know. This has been your baby for a long time, if not in writing then in your thoughts. But the joy of finally seeing your own book unfold, chapter by chapter, is well worth your confidence in your ghostwriter. The ghostwriter wants you to have the book you desire, and wants it to be as big a success as it is in your dreams.
